Pottery Hot

how sot is a kiln for pottery/ceramics?
I was in my ceramics class and my clay was being fired. So i go in the kiln room and the fire coming out of the top was green. so i asked my teacher how hot it was and he didnt know so i need some help here.
I assume you were using a gas kiln. The color of the fire in this case only tells you that there are copper salts from some glazes in the kiln. Unless you do reduction firing for glazes flames shouldn’t really come out of the kiln though they might go into the kiln where your burners are.
It depends whether it was a bisque or glaze firing. A common bisque temperature is cone 05 which corresponds to about 1870°F (1021°C). The hottest somebody would fire a kiln would be for cone 10 which would be 2284°F (1251°C). As the temperature is brought up slowly we can’t know at which point in the firing cycle your kiln was.
Read up on pyrometric cones and temperatures at which various clays sinter if you want to know more.
